What is the Oceanwest Own Boat Training Programme all about?

Do you own a yacht but don’t feel confident enough to head off on coastal sailing adventures?

Do you want to build a solid foundation of core sailing and boating skills?

With the Oceanwest Own Boat Training programme we will tailor a programme to suit your needs exactly. We can run a one day session or why not book your RYA practical course on your own boat for up to 5 people. Competent Crew, Dayskipper, Coastal Skipper or even Yachtmaster prep. We can run all of the official RYA courses on your yacht.

You can learn how to confidently handle your yacht in confined spaces, practice safe and controlled berthing techniques in the marina.

Practice anchoring and pick up moorings, try your hand at Mediterranean mooring techniques, and recovering a man overboard.

Improve your skills with real life navigation and how to use your electronic equipment.

Learn pilotage techniques for entering and leaving harbour, plus how to plan a passage.

And much more – whatever you need to give you the confidence and skills to enjoy your yacht.

How does it work?

We come to you and deliver the training on your own yacht, on the river or on the ocean. Perth and SW region
Our highly skilled and experienced RYA sailing instructors will design a structured training programme for you.
One to one training or invite your family and friends
Book your training one session at a time to give you chance to consolidate your training in-between training sessions
All single sessions run for 6 hours and cost $795 (<100km from Bunbury) / $995 ( >100km radius from Bunbury as far north as Mindarie or as far south as Augusta) per session.
RYA 5 day live aboard sailing course – $4995 for up to 5 people. Areas covered as above.

					  Hi, my name is Gianluca Cavaiola, I'm an Italian kiteboarder and surfer and the last October I had my first sailing experience with Gary, the instructor and owner of Oceanwest... read more Charter. I started from the "Competent Crew" sailing course and after that, I literally couldn't stop. The course was amazing, on a beautiful boat (Oceanis 41.1) at Geographe Bay near Busselton. During this course, I've learned so much, and for this reason, I decided to run through the theory courses (day skipper and Coastal skipper theory courses). I passed the theory exams and I went back on board of Gary's boat for two more weeks. During these two weeks, I become Day skipper and Coastal skipper and I had two perfect instructors: Gary and Nick. Their teaching techniques are brilliant, they always had the answer to all my questions and doubts. During the Coastal Skipper course, I had a chat with Gary and together we decided that my skills were high enough to give a try to the Yacht-Master exam. So, I booked one more practical course in may and Gary prepared myself for the exam in the best way possible. On the first day of the preparation course I was completely scared about the exam, but day after day, thanks to Gary I felt better and when the exam on Saturday came I was 100% ready and relaxed for it. After a long examination day, I passed my exam. My season with Oceanwest has been amazing and I couldn't imagine achieving this goal just in few months. I strongly recommend Oceanwest, a perfect sailing school for everyone and for every sailing level. The instructor skills and experience are so high that for me was always a good moment to learn something.  I'm proud that I've been one of your first students and also your last one for this season. Gary was very patient and made it a fun environment for completing... read more the course. Along with the other crew onboard it felt more like an educational holiday.

Samara is a well equiped and comfortable vessel.

					  Our 5 day Competent Crew training course with Gary from Oceanwest Charters exceeded my expectations. With years of powerboat experience but very limited sailing experience the week was a steep... read more learning curve.  Gary's calm manner in training was great and his sense of humour appreciated.  Fellow crew were just a bonus to the whole experience.

Would highly recommend this experience.
